Preview 2008: Receivers

As part of a multiple story series, begins taking a look at the 2008 Vanderbilt football team today as check out the wide receivers and tight ends. The Commodores open their 2008 season on August 28th when they visit Miami (Ohio).

Update: August 6th- George Smith out for a month due to a stress fracture in his right foot.

Overiew: While the Commodores will surely miss All-Everything Earl Bennett, the cup board is far from empty. Returning starters George Smith and Sean Walker have over 100 combined career passes. Vandy also has a good number of battle tested tight ends who have the ability to take over for now graduated Brad Allen.

Wide Receivers

George Smith (6-3, 202, R-Sr.)- Smith will enter his sixth season with Vanderbilt in 2008. He has 76 career catches for 5 touchdowns.
Sean Walker (6-0, 175, R-Sr.)- The fleet footed Walker has 41 career catches. He will long be remembered by VU fans for a 35-yard scoring catch he made in 2006 to help beat Georgia in Athens.

Wide Receivers

Chris Crooks (6-2, 192, R-Fr.)- Walk on.
Chris DeGeorge (5-11, 195, R-Fr.)- Walk on.
Andrew Diomande (6-1, 195, R-Sr.)- Transfer from Clemson sat out last season. Had 4 catches for the Tigers.
Jamie Graham (5-11, 180, R-Fr.)- Graham, who also plays guard for the VU basketball squad, played cornerback as a true freshman but could be moved to wide receiver for 2008.
Chris Griffin (6-1, 185, R-So.)- Walk on.
Chris Reinert (5-9, 180, R-Jr.)- Walk on blessed with good hands; has one career catch.
Larry Simmons (5-9, 165, R-Jr.)- Caught 2 passes against Wake Forest in 2007; has 3 career catches.
Udom Umoh (5-11, 170, R-Fr.)- Umoh looked good in the spring and is ready to contribute after sitting out 2007.
Alex Washington (5-10, 180, R-Jr.)- Washington had 9 catches a year ago and also excelled at returning punts. A knee injury sustained during spring drills could limit his play this season.
Justin Wheeler (6-0, 175, R-Jr.)- Had 10 catches including a huge catch at South Carolina.
Turner Wimberly (6-0, 195, R-So.)- Moved to wide receiver before 2007. Could develop into a fine receiver.

Tight Ends

Brandon Barden (6-5, 240, R-Fr.)- Freshman tight end who transfered from Virginia Tech is ready to knock heads.
Jake Bradford (6-6, 270, R-Jr.)- Saw significant action in 2007 catching 4 passes.
Matt Bubis (5-10, 230, R-Jr.)- Walk on who saw action in 9 games last year at fullback and tight end.
Justin Green (6-6, 235, R-So.)- Rangy player caught 4 passes in 2007 against Alabama and Auburn.
Austin Monahan (6-6, 248, So.)- Had a catch against South Carolina. One of only 3 true freshmen to see action in 2007.
