Vanderbilt Preview 2008: Quarterbacks

As part of's continuing preview of the 2008 Vanderbilt football team today we check out the quarterbacks. The Commodores open their 2008 season on August 28th when they visit Miami (Ohio).

Overview: Any team needs a good stable of quarterbacks and Vanderbilt has a good group of signal callers. Two players have extensive starting experience and two backups both have the ability to step up if needed. Head coach Bobby Johnson spoke about the quarterbacks recently at SEC Media days, "I think we're going to be better offensively this year," Johnson said. "I think we're going to be much better at quarterback this year because Chris Nickson is confident and healthy again. I think we did a disservice to him last year trying to play him as much as we did after he got hurt. Mackenzi Adams is going to be better because he's a year older."

Starters lost:

Richard Kovalcheck

Returning starters:

Mackenzi Adams (6-2, 212, R-Jr.)- Adams performed well and led Vandy to their biggest win of the year, an upset over South Carolina in Columbia. Completed 101 of 182 passes for 1,043 yards, 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Also rushed for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Chris Nickson (6-1, 210, R-Sr.)- Nickson started the first 6 games of the 2007 season and completed 62 of 119 passes for 763 yards and 6 touchdowns. Had 5 interceptions. A gifted runner, he has rushed for 921 yards including 694 during the 2006 season when he led Vandy to an upset win over Georgia in Athens.

Others to watch:

Jared Funk (6-2, 200, R-So.)- Funk has yet to see the field as a Vandy quarterback but he showed great improvement during the spring.

Larry Smith (6-2, 205, R-Fr.)- Smith led the scout team last year and could see backup playing this season.

Projected starters:

Mackenzi Adams (6-2, 212, R-Jr.) OR
Chris Nickson (6-1, 210, R-Sr.)
