Coach Ted Cain, the Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach, has been put in charge of recruiting the Palmetto State DB, and Batts has been speaking with him on a regular basis. "I talk to Coach Cain a lot," Batts told VandyMania.com. "He has had nothing but positive things to say about me as a prospect. He told me that he and some of the other coaches have had a chance to few my highlight film, and that they were very impressed with what they saw. He told me that their DB coach likes me a lot. Basically he told me that they like my lengthiness and my speed."
Not only is the coaching staff impressed with Steffon's play at the cornerback position, but they are also impressed with his play on special teams. "They told me that they like me as a gunner on special teams," Batts said. "On my film I had a lot of plays where ran down the field and downed the ball on the 1-yard line. They were very impressed with that."
Steffon has been invited out to Vanderbilt to check things out up close and personal. Although he doesn't have a date locked in stone, he's most certain that he'll be taking the ride to Nashville... "Oh yeah, I'll be going out there for a visit," Batts said without hesitation. "I'm not quite sure when though. I'll have to look at their schedule and see what's up."
"Coach Cain wants me to come to the Vanderbilt-South Carolina," Batts continued. "But, that game is going to be on a Thursday, and we have a game on the following day. He is promising me that they are going to beat South Carolina this year, and he wants me to be there to witness it (laughing)."
Steffon currently has scholarship offers from Newberry College, and the Air Force Academy. He is hoping that a productive performance on the field this fall would result into several more scholarship offers, including one from the Commodores. Should the Commodores offer, VandyMania.com will be the first to let you know…
Note: Last year Batts recorded 58 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 10 pass deflections from his cornerback position. He reports a 4.4 in the forty yard dash, and a 33 inch vertical. He is also a standout inside the classroom with a 3.6 Core GPA.
