Commodores gain outstanding wide receiver

The Vanderbilt staff picked up another jewel Wednesday, this time a Tennessee product. A star wide receiver/defensive back has committed to Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt is continuing a strong showing on the recruiting trail with a commitment from big wide receiver Stephon Johnson of Marshall County High School in Lewisburg, TN. At 6-3 and 188 pounds Johnson uses his size and strength to make things happen in the open field.

"He committed to Vanderbilt this week," said Marshall County Head Coach Mac McCurry. "He plays free safety and wide receiver for us. He led the mid state region in interceptions this year with eight. I don't have his receiving stats handy, but he is very dangerous in the open field. He'll throw a stiff arm on someone, break a tackle, and he's gone. He's a force with the ball in his hands and gets a lot of yards after the catch."

"Johnson played quarterback as a junior. We needed him to fill in in a pinch, and he threw for over 1,000 yards last year. That took some time away from his best position of wide receiver, but he's a team guy all the way."

With the Holiday Weekend already in full swing, BorderWars.com would like to thank Coach McCurry for taking the time to talk with us, and we will try to catch up with Stephon Johnson next week.
