Vandy Men Fall 82-68 in Gainesville

Erving Walker scored 17 points off the bench and the Gator team shot 61% in route to a 82-68 win over the Dores in Gainesville on Saturday.

"We had some missed opportunities in the first half with missed lay-ups. Florida got on a role and got its confidence up. We had some breakdowns defensively; we just had a hard time guarding them. Everyone was shooting well for them. They took care of the ball and everyone was hitting the right guy - that's what Florida can do to you. We did a much better job in the second half. We were attacking in the second half offensively. By that time it's really too late, unless you can put a whole bunch of stops together. We weren't able to get enough stops combined with baskets to get us back in it," Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said after the game.

The Commodores got on the board first when Brad Tinsley hit a jumper just 32 seconds gone in the game, but they would not get their next basket until 11:45 left in the first half. In that time Florida scored 12 points to hold a 12-4 lead.

Dan Werner would hit a three on Florida's ensuing possession that started a 9-2 Gators run to push the score to 21-6. George Drake would get a basket and draw a foul on the next Vandy possession. Drake knocked down his free throw and a Tinsley jumper on the next possession would cut the UF lead to 10 at 21-11.

Back to back baskets by Nick Calathes would start a 13-6 Florida run to push the lead to 34-17 with 2:39 left to play before the intermission. Both teams would get six points in the closing minutes of the half to give the Gators a 40-23 lead at the break.

The break did not cool the Gators off at all. They opened the second half on a 10-2 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 50-25.

The Commodores would cut the lead to 14 with 12:30 left to play after Drake hit two free throws, but the Gators would go on another 8-0 run. The Dores would cut the lead to 12 one more time in the second half, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Black and Gold got 18 points from A.J. Ogilvy, 12 from Tinsley and 10 from Drake.

Florida got 17 from Erving Walker, 14 from Calathes, 12 from Walter Hodge, 11 from Dan Werner and 10 from Alex Tyus.

Vanderbilt's next game is Wednesday night when they travel to Georgia to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. That game tips off at 6:30.
