Commodore coaches are reportedly high on fullback/linebacker/athlete Evandall Williams of Northside High School in Havana, Fla. The 6-1, 215-pound Williams made an official visit to Vanderbilt last weekend and reportedly received a scholarship offer from the Commodore staff; at last report, however, Williams remains committed to Central Florida of the Mid-American Conference.
The Commodores would also love to sway Phillip Wheeler, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker from Shaw High School in Columbus, Ga. Wheeler made an official visit to Vanderbilt the weekend of Jan. 17, despite having made an early commitment to Georgia Tech.
Meanwhile, Commodore coaches were reportedly in the home of running back Thomas Clayton on Tuesday. Clayton, a 5-11, 200-pounder with reported 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash, is a freshman at Florida State who has announced that he plans to transfer. Clayton has publicly listed Vanderbilt as one of his possible destinations, along with Northwestern, Nebraska, Penn State and others. (One of the Insiders sites quoted Clayton Tuesday saying he was bound for Northwestern, but that may be premature. Stay tuned.)
Michael Hines, a wide receiver from Asheville, N.C. who made a January official visit to Vanderbilt, has committed to Western Carolina of the Southern Conference.
The Tennessean reported Tuesday that Brandon Moorehead, a running back from Nashville-Overton who visited Vanderbilt officially last weekend, had not been offered a scholarship by Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt received a total of four new commitments over the weekend. Sean Dixon, a defensive back from Tampa-Chamberlain, Fla.; Tom Sorensen, an offensive lineman from Salt Lake City-Brighton, Utah; Khalid Sutton, a DB from College Park-Woodward Academy, Ga.; and Darnell Martemus, a DB from Cleveland-St. Ignatius, Ohio, all pledged to sign with Vanderbilt on signing day.
