It's Murray State in San Jose

Vanderbilt is headed west again for the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores learned today that they are a No. 4 seed and will face a 30-4 Murray State team on Thursday in San Jose, Calif.

Murray State, a No. 13 seed, won the Ohio Valley Tournament Championship on March 6 by defeating Morehead State, 62-51. Murray, which also won the OVC regular season title with a 17-1 record, has wins over non-conference opponents James Madison (71-43) and Florida International (84-71).  The Racers also played tough at Cal before losing, 75-70.  

Common opponents: Western Kentucky defeated both Vanderbilt (76-69) and Murray State (83-72).  Vanderbilt beat Tennessee State (84-71).  Murray defeated the Tigers twice (76-54 and 84-51).  

RPI ranking: Vanderbilt 25; Murray State 62.

Quick Scout: Murray features a balanced scoring team with four players averaging 10 points a game. Sophomore Ivan Aska, a 6-7 forward, averages 10.6 points per game and five rebounds. Guards Isaac Miles and B.J. Jenkins have combined to make 105 treys this season.  Backup guard Isaiah Canaan has made 48-of-105 3-point attempts.

The Future:  The winner of the Vanderbilt-Murray State game will face either No. 5 seed Butler or No. 12 seed UTEP on Saturday in San Jose.  Saturday's winner will likely face No. 1 seed Syracuse the following week in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Vanderbilt in the NCAA: Vanderbilt has an all-time record of 9-11 in the NCAA.  In their most recent NCAA appearance the Commodores last fell to Siena, 83-62, in 2008. Vanderbilt advanced to the Elite 8 in 1965 and the Sweet 16 in 1988, 1993 and 2007. 

Fast fact: In 2007 Vanderbilt defeated Washington State, 78-74, in overtime, to earn a trip to the Sweet 16. Sacramento is only 124 miles from San Jose.
