Dores shutout Cats, 7-0

Quietly on Wednesday the Vanderbilt Commodores secured the 400th win for Coach Tim Corbin. Tonight's win may have been more special as the ‘Dores captured their second SEC win of the season on Friday. Coming off of a tough series last weekend at Alabama where Vanderbilt went 1-2, the Commodores need a series win this weekend at home.

Sonny Gray was in top form and the Vandy leather offered great support to get the series opening night shutout 7-0 over a tough UK team.

Gray started the game on the mound and threw 7 innings of scoreless baseball allowing only 4 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 3, but the Cats had a difficult time mastering his 95 mph fastball, slider, and curve. Corey Williams then pitched the final 2 innings to close the game. He allowed no runs, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts, and a walk. Gray picked up the win to go to 4-2, while UK's Logan Darnell picked up the loss and is now 3-2 on the year.

The Vanderbilt bats were clutch tonight with several 2 out hits. The first of these clutch 2-out hits was by Andrew Giobbi in the first inning to score Vanderbilt's first run. Then in the third, Curt Casali and Connor Harrell each had 2 out hits that scored 2 more early runs. The young guys led the way though as Connor Harrell, Anthony Gomez, Jason Esposito, and Bryan Johns each had 2 hits on the night.

The sixth inning looked to be a big one for the Cats when they had runners on first and second with no outs, but the Commodores flashed the leather to keep the shutout intact. Connor Harrell chased down a hard fit fly ball in right center in the sixth. Brian Harris was also rock solid at short, diving to catch 2 balls to keep them in the infield to preserve the shutout.

The Commodores improved to 19-4, and 2-2 SEC, while UK dropped to 16-6, 1-3 in the SEC. Both teams will strap on the cleats again tomorrow at 2 PM at Hawkins Field. If the weather forecast for Sunday continues to show rain, the teams may attempt a double header on Saturday.
