Baseball: Vanderbilt ties series with 6-2 win

TALLAHASSEE-- Today the Vanderbilt baseball team did something no other Commodore team has ever done before. Vandy scored early and late in the game to top Florida State, 6-2, in the second game of the regional. The victory was the first ever for Vandy in a Super Regional game. The win tied the best-of-three series, 1-1, with series championship coming up on Sunday.

Unlike Friday, Vanderbilt was the first to score on Saturday. A sacrifice ground ball by Aaron Westlake scored Brian Harris in the first. Later in the first, a double by Curt Casali scored Anthony Gomez.

In the third inning Jason Esposito's solo homer with two outs made it 3-0 Vanderbilt.

In the fifth Florida State's Jayce Boyd hit a line drive homerun to right field to cut the Commodore lead to 3-1. The Seminoles added another run in the sixth after a controversial call by the first base umpire allowed the home team to stay in the inning. Replays showed that the runner was clearly out. With the bases loaded and one out, catcher Rafael Lopez drilled a hit to right field. Stuart Tapley scored to make it 3-2 but right fielder Joe Loftus' throw to home plate gunned down a second runner to get Vandy out of the inning still clinging to a narrow lead. After the game Loftus commented on his great throw to home plate, "When we get in those situations for some reason I always feel like I want the ball to be hit to me. I feel like I can make that throw every time. I made the throw and Gio (catcher Andrew Giobbi) put the tag down."

After the sixth inning Vanderbilt starter Sonny Gray, who pitched 6 innings allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and striking out 3, was pulled and replaced with Grayson Garvin. Garvin pitched the remainder of the game allowing 3 hits, no walks and striking out three.

In the eighth the Commodore batters gave their team some room to breath when they plated three more runs. Gomez led off the inning with a double. After Westlake struck out Jason Esposito was intentionally walked. Curt Casali then doubled to right to score Gomez. Andrew Giobbi reached on a error while attempting a sacrifice bunt which allowed Esposito to score. Freshman Mike Yastrzemski's single to right scored Casaili.

In the Florida State ninth inning Garvin got the first out on a fly ball and then struck out Lopez for out No. 2. A ground ball out at first ended the game and gave the Commodores the elusive victory.

Vanderbilt improves to 46-19 while Florida State falls to 46-18. A final game on Sunday at noon will decide which team goes to the College Baseball World Series at Omaha.
