Gomez started the year as a reserve infielder and by the end of the regular season was the top freshmen hitter (batting average) in the country. He was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection at second base and also earned SEC All-Freshman honors.
"Anthony solidified himself as a very competitive player in the SEC and he maintained a level of consistency that lasted throughout the year," said Vanderbilt head baseball coach Tim Corbin.
The New Jersey native finished the year with a team best .379 batting average with two homers, 10 doubles and 30 RBI. He was nine for 12 in stolen bases and also led the team with 13 sacrifice bunts. The batting average led all freshman in the league.
In the field he played a solid second base with just five errors in 193 chances (.974 fielding percentage), including error-free play in the final 17 games of the year.
The freshman struck out just five times in 214 at bats in the regular season, ranking him seventh in the toughest to strikeout category.
In league action, the New Jersey native hit a team best .371 with two homers, two doubles, 15 RBI and 17 runs scored in 27 games (26 starts). He struck out just twice in 105 at bats.
Gomez is currently playing summer baseball with the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He is hitting .326 in 12 games in the wood-bat league.
In addition to the Baseball America recognition, he also earned Freshman All-American plaudits via Collegiate Baseball and was an All-South Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
