Larry Smith to start vs. Northwestern

On Sunday Vanderbilt head coach Robbie Caldwell announced that redshirt junior Larry Smith would be the starting quarterback over redshirt senior Jared Funk.

"Larry has separated himself, and deserves to get the ball," Caldwell said. "He has the big edge on experience, and really understands the offense. I expect to see Larry play well Saturday."

Caldwell also spoke highly of Funk, "Jared also did a great job and really made it a competition. He'll be the No. 2 guy and will be ready to play if called upon. We have confidence in both of them," the head coach added.

During the 2009 season Smith completed 106 of 227 passes for 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 88.00.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2008 Smith helped lead Vanderbilt to a 16-14 victory over Boston College in the Music City Bowl. It was Vanderbilt's first bowl win in over 50 years.
