2014 Intro: Austin Proehl

Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte (N.C.) Providence wide receiver Austin Proehl had a big season. Proehl helped lead the Panthers to the playoffs and is generating interest from several college football programs.

After winning only two games in 2011, the Providence Panthers were determined to rebound this fall. The Panthers made it to the playoffs and Austin Proehl was a major reason for the team's success.

"It was a good year," said Proehl. "We had some injuries, but we kept battling and made the playoffs."

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver is hearing from several schools.

"I've heard from (North) Carolina, Texas Tech, Florida, Wake (Forest), N.C. State, Villanova, and Maryland," he said. "I've also heard a little from Oregon."

One school could be close to offering him his first scholarship.

"Wake seems close to offering," Proehl said. "Obviously, my dad (former Wake Forest and NFL wide receiver Ricky Proehl) went there and they seem really interested. So we will just see what happens."

Although his father went to Wake Forest, that will not influence his decision.

"My dad just told he wants me to go wherever I fit in and wherever I feel comfortable," said Proehl.

The junior has taken some visits.

" I've been to Wake twice, Carolina twice, and Florida," he said. "I'm going to try to head up to Maryland in a few weeks. I'm going to also try to get out west to see a couple schools. I'm just going to try to get to every school I can before the season is over."

One trip really impressed him.

"My favorite visit was probably Carolina," Proehl said. "I really like it there, and I love Coach (Gunter) Brewer. He played with my dad at Wake, so I've known him a long time. I know my dad believes in him and knows he is a good coach. We've talked a lot and it's great."

What is Phoehl looking for in a school?

"I'm just looking for a school where the coaches appreciate me, understand what I can bring to the table, and believe in me," he said.

Proehl played several positions this season. He finished the year with 504 yards receiving, 503 yards passing, and 189 yards rushing, and 15 touchdowns. He also returned a punt 65 yards and a kickoff 85 yards for touchdowns.
