Eli Brooks has been building a reputation this spring and summer and slowly climbing the Class of 2017 ranking. After evaluating him intensely, Villanova offered the 6-1, point guard a scholarship yesterday (as was tweeted by his Jersey Shore Warrior AAU program and confirmed by his father, James Brooks), his coach at Spring Grove, PA). He now holds about a dozen offers including Kansas State and N.C. State.
He is a true point guard with quickness, court vision and a jump shot that requires defenders to play out on him. Brooks performed solidly this weekend at Hoop Group Summer Jam Fest in Manheim, PA. One of his most positive attributes is that he values the basketball - he has a high basketball IQ and infrequently commits turnovers.
Villanova's needs list over the next two recruiting classes includes guards and more guards. The Cats are looking for multiple ball-handlers and shooters and Brooks could provide both of those skills. Jay Wright's recruiting philosophy includes looking for players that fit the culture at Villanova and want to be a part of everything that represents in terms of being both a student and a player - given that Brooks admits to growing up a Villanova fan, his desire to wear the Wildcat jersey could be a big factor down the line as this recruitment continues. Cat fans should expect Brooks to visit in August.
