Villanova - Elon Preview

Villanova (1-0 CAA) travels to Elon (1-0) for a 3:30 Saturday kick-off in the first ever game between the two schools. Here is a preview and all the info you need to enjoy the game.

The 3-1 Wildcats travel to Elon, NC. this week for the first ever gridiron battle between Villanova and the Phoenix.  This is the second CAA game for each team with Villanova holding a home win over Towson and Elon coming off an impressive, 27-10, win at William & Mary last weekend.

Kick-off is at 3:30 and the game can be listened to locally on 610 Sports WTEL or followed online: Live Stats | Live Audio | Live Video.

5 Keys:

  • How the Cats adjust to playing on grass
  • Turnover margin
  • Can the resurgent Wildcat kicking game maintain momentum
  • Can ‘Nova maintain a balanced offense as Elon tries to make the Cats one-dimensional
  • Will Wildcat defense continue to make more big plays than it allows?

Coaches Takes:

Elon Coach, Rich Skrosky, had the following to say about Villanova earlier this week “What stands out to me is how good they are in two categories: their turnover ratio right now is amongst the top in the league, they are 3rd in rush defense and 2nd in rushing offense.  They are running the ball well, stopping the run on defense pretty well and I am really surprised by the quarterback, Bednarczyk - he has improved significantly.  His pocket presence is a lot better than it was last year.  Their perimeter speed is pretty impressive.  This is another battle.  Welcome to the CAA.”

Coach Talley shared the Villanova concerns about Elon with VUSports on Monday: “Right now our concern is getting on an airplane and flying down to Elon and seeing how we play.  We have never played there before.  And, trying to become familiar with the surroundings, we will be playing on grass and we usually play on turf - so I think we need to make an adjustment there.  And, not being familiar with Elon's players or their style of offense and defense.  So I think we need to become aware quickly of the kind of team that we are playing.  Certainly their win over William & Mary got everybody's attention for sure so we know we are going to be in for a very very difficult game.  They are extremely well coached and they just did a phenomenal job last week against William & Mary.”
