In a game that featured a huge swing in the weather, Villanova earned a 41-10 win over Delaware and, most likely, a spot in the FCS playoffs (the brackets will be announced 11AM today on the FCS Selection Show on ESPNU).
With the weather a “balmy” high 60s and most sunny, the game kicked off and the Wildcats came out playing like the team with the most to gain.
Zach Bednarczyk tossed four first-half TDs as ‘Nova raced out to a 27-10 half-time lead. The scoring strikes were to Ryan Bell from 4-yards out (the only scoring of the first quarter), to Changa Hidge from 34-yards, to Bell again from 3-yards out and the Matt Gudzak from 54-yards out to cap a quick-strike, 3 play, 80 yard drive. The Cats had the PAT blocked and then allowed a late TD on a 7 play, 63 yard Blue Hen drive in only 2:38 to cut the 24 point lead to 17 at intermission.
Around half-time, the winds picked up considerably and a cold front rolled in that brought the temperature down to the 40s and made passing the ball far more difficult. This played into the hands of Villanova as the Cats went to the ground game to run clock. ‘Nova scored two second-half TDs - both were 1-yard runs (Javon White in the third quarter and Gudzak in the fourth). Meanwhile, the Villanova defense shut down the Delaware ground game - holding the Hens scoreless in the second half.
The Cats dominated total yardage 472-227 and rushing yardage 277-112. Villanova avoided committing any turnovers and led in time of possession 35:13 to 24:47.
‘Nova offensive stars included Bednarczyk as he completed 13 of 17 pass attempts for 195 yards and 4 TDs without an INT. Gudzak rushed for a career high 121 yards on only 13 carries. On defense, Ed Shockley had nine total tackles with a sack, Austin Calitro added six tackles and Rasaan Stewart grabbed a pick.
