ALL-TIME NCAA TOURNAMENT PERFORMANCE RANKINGS (through the 2017 NCAA Tournament)

This ranking system is an attempt to provide insight into the question "what is the greatest college basketball program of all-time?". There are several theories out there as to how one goes about choosing the best programs. Some believe that the number of national titles is the only fair measure. UCLA won so many titles in one era (the '60s and '70s) that the fans of other schools argue that to be the best of all-time, a program has to be consistently excellent over many years. These are the Kentucky and North Carolina fans that believe going deep in the tournament almost every year for 50 years ought to count for something. Hard to argue that consistent excellence isn't important.

What this point system does is credit each team fractions of points for every tournament appearance made. If a team wins the title it is credited 1 point, if a team loses in the NCAA Final, they are credited 1/2 a point, losing in the National Semi's is worth 1/4 point, and so forth. What happens under this system is that teams that make the tournament a lot but don't get W's fester towards the bottom (teams like Princeton and to a lesser extent Notre Dame). Teams that have a lot of appearances and frequently advance deep get rewarded.

In the end, this system doesn't end any arguments, but it does a good job of identifying the best programs - this is an impressive list of teams that have "made noise" in March.

Here are the best programs of all-time based on their ability to advance in the NCAA Tournament (from 1939-2017):
