Saturday PM AAU Action

VUSports closes out today's coverage of AAU action from the major sneaker events with a look at how Villanova prospects fared in the afternoon and evening games ...

Now we focus our attention on afternoon and evening AAU games on Saturday, 22 April across the country on this first Live Evaluation Period weekend of the 2017, D1 recruiting cycle.  Here are some notes and stat lines on performances by some of the Villanova recruiting targets that were in action ...

First, at the Nike EYBL event in Hampton VA:

The PSA Cardinals defeated the Playground Elite by a score of 53-41.  Cole Anthony scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting from the field, 0-1 from the free-throw line and 0-2 beyond the arc.  He also grabbed 3 boards, dished out 5 assist (with zero turnovers) and had one pilfer in 23 minutes of play.  His teammate, Hameir Wright tallied 7 points on 2-6 FG, 3-4 FT, and 0-1 3PFG while vacuuming up 12 rebounds, blocking 4 shots and grabbing two steals.

The Playaz Club fell 94-85 to MeanStreets despite 29 points from Tavon Jones and a 13 point (6-11 FG, 1-4 3PFG) and 4 steal performance from Jalen Carey.

The Rens played Team Final by a final score of 79-61.  Cameron Reddish scored 27 for Team Final on a combination of strong drives to the bucket and three-point shooting.  The ultra-skilled and versatile star shot 9-15 FG, 6-8 FT, and 3-8 3PFG while gathering up 5 rebounds, and blocking 2 shots.  Cormac Ryan was very solid for The Rens.  He had a strong floor game. poured in 21 points (6-9 FG, 7-8 FT, 2-3 3PFG) along with 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 steal.  Ryan does a great job of squaring himself to the basket when he shoots and has a pure release.  He combines a solid handle with good court sense and the ability to score in a variety of ways.  Kofi Cockburn is a solid post prospect.  He takes up space inside and is a good positional rebounder with good hands and the ability to finish around the cup.  Cockburn scored 18 points on 7-11 FG and 4-5 FTs while ripping down 11 rebounds.  He didn't show much in terms of shot-blocking ability or face-up game in this contest but there is plenty to like about his upside.

The New York Lightning fell to Cal Supreme, 87-80 despite getting a quality outing from Aidan Igiehon.  Igiehorn posted 18 points (7-9 FG, 4-6 FT) and had 7 caroms as well.

Team Takeover bounced back to secure a 52-47 victory over Team Melo.  Brandon Slater had another quiet offensive game with 4 points on 2-7 FG, 0-2 FT, and 0-2 3PFG.  Though he had only one rebound he did stand out defensively with his versatility, athleticism and length.  He projects as a guy who could play at the top of Jay Wright's three-quarter-court press and be very effective disrupting passes and making it hard for opponents to get into their offense.  Jalen Smith had another 7 points scoring game - this time on an efficient 3-4 FG and 1-2 FTs.  He contributed 2 rebounds and a key transition bucket in the closing minute and change as Team Takeover made a move to close out Team Melo.  Team Melo was led by 19 points from the deceptively fast, Noah Locke (6-14 FG, 5-6 FT, 2-6 3PFG).  Though he isn't long or a jet in transition, he has some hesitation dribble moves, a good first step and the ability to be crafty and slither by defenders.  Brendan Adams scored only 5 points on 2-3 FG and 1-2 3PFG with one steal.

After dropping 37 against Team Final in his morning session game. Cole Swider cooled off a bit in the evening with an 11 point, 5 rebound, 4 steal performance.  He is a good positional defender with the court sense to anticipate plays and get his hands in passing lanes.  Spider shot 4-8 FG, 3-5 FT, and 0-2 3PFG.

The City Rocks won their nightcap game by a score of 87-8- over Spiece Indy Heat.  Joseph Girard III showed that he has deep three-point range by dropping a couple of deep threes on his way to 18 points on 5-16 3PFG shooting.  His offense has been quite one dimensional so far in EYBL play.

Now switching over to games played in the UAA Event in NY:

DC Premier got rolled over by Earl Watson Elite to the tune of 69-46.  Prentiss Hubb scored 11 points in 28 minutes on 2-7 FG, 1-4 3PFG and 6-9 FT.  Hubby tallied 1 assist with no turnovers.

Team Breakdown took out Team Charlotte, 79-76 in a game that featured both Elijah Weaver and Devon Dotson.  Weaver scored 11 points to go with 5 assists, 6 turnovers, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.  He shot 4-8 from the floor, 1-2 3PFG, and 2-5 FTs in 24 minutes of play.  Dotson played 30 minutes - scoring 18 points (8-12 FG, 0-2 3PFG, 2-3 FT) handing out 8 assists, swiping 4 steals, and grabbing 4 boards.  He also turned it over 5 times.

We R1 defeated G3 Grind 75-59.  The winners got 15 points in 21 minutes out of Isaiah Wong on 5-11 FG, 1-2 3PFG, and 4-4 FT.  Wong also pulled in 6 rebounds and had 3 steals - offset by 3 turnovers.

Sports U took care of Florida Vipers, 63-56 spear-headed by another scintillating performance from Jahvon Quinerly.  Quinerly put together a 22 point, 9 assist, 4 rebound game in which he shot 8-12 FG, 4-5 3PFG and 2-2 FT.  He was supported once again by Nazreon Reid who put up 19 points, 4 boards and 2 blocks in 30 minutes of play.  Reid was 7-15 from the floor, 3-5 from three-point range and 2-2 from the line.

KC Run GMC knocked off Team Rio, 67-46.  Team Rio played without Scottie Lewis (injury) and got only 9 points, 4 rebounds, 0 assists, 4 turnovers and 2 blocked shots out of 2019 stand-out, Bryan Antoine.

And finally, out at the Adidas Gauntlet event in Dallas:

The NE Playaz pounded Chauncey Billups Elite 72-43 in a game where Nate Laszewski scored a game-high 13 points on 4-9 FG, 2-4 3PFG, and 3-3 FTs.  He completed a double-double as well with 10 rebounds to go with 2 steals and a dime.  Laszewski scored a team-high 12 points (4-10 FG, 2-5 3PFG, 2-2 FT) with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal in his night-cap game - a win over M33M Elite.

Mass Rivals roasted D1 Minnesota, 82-59 as A.J. Reeves dropped in 12 points on 4-8 FG, 2-5 3PFG and 2-2 FTs to supplement 2 rebounds and 2 steals.  He posted these numbers in only 15 minutes of game action.

Rasir Bolton had 9 points, 0 assists and 5 turnovers to go with 3 steals in a Team Loaded VA win over Basketball University.
