Class of 2018, defensive tackle, Garrett Zobel is a big punisher. He is the type of run stuffer every team needs. In the trenches, while other linemen are banging and wrestling, he has his eyes on the ball and can out muscle opponents. At 6’3, 275, Zobel is solid against the run. He was first team All-Catholic and second team All-City defensive linemen while also being selected second team All-Catholic offensive linemen and second team All-Southeastern Pennsylvania offensive linemen.
Leader Johnson: How has this recruiting process been for you so far and what teams have come at you the hardest?
Garrett Zobel: The recruiting process has been picking up this spring. I was able to make a few junior day visits and coaches have been visiting my school. I got to compete at [Nike Football] The Opening [Regional] in NJ and at this point, I’m just working hard to get ready for summer camps to show coaches what I can do. Army gave me my first offer so I’ve had the most contact with them.
Leader Johnson: What do you look for in a school?
Garrett Zobel: I’m looking for a great education and a great football tradition.
Leader Johnson: What position would you rather play OL or DL?
Garrett Zobel: Wherever my coach needs me. Defensive end, defensive lineman is my first choice but I also played offensive guard as a junior and I am pretty comfortable there. I’ve been asked about converting to Center in college so I guess we will see.
Leader Johnson: What do you like about Villanova?
Garrett Zobel: To attend a world class university and also have a great chance to compete for a national championship is really a special opportunity. Villanova is local for me so that’s great. Mom earned an MBA from Villanova so I kind of grew up on Villanova basketball which is awesome too.
Leader Johnson: How long has Villanova been pursuing you and what have they been saying to you?
Garrett Zobel: I’ve known the coaches for a few years actually thanks to a clinic my high school does with them every year. No offer at this point, but I’d love the opportunity.
Leader Johnson: Have you visited Villanova or do you plan to visit them?
Garrett Zobel: Yes, I attended Villanova’s junior day. The campus and facilities are great. I plan to come back for camp over the summer.
Leader Johnson: What do you bring to a team?
Garrett Zobel: I love football, I love to compete and I bring a great work ethic. Coaches tell me defensively I have an explosive first step and punch and I’m able to track the ball well and I'm able to rush the passer on third down. Coaches tell me Offensively, I'm able to to drive people off the line and finish blocks, plus I can make athletic pulls in open field.
Leader Johnson: Nice talking to you Garrett …
Garrett Zobel: Thanks!
