Jay Wright Interview Pt. 4

In the fourth segment of VUSports' exclusive interview with Jay Wright we bring you the speed round and 'the Donte - M.J. question" ...

VUSports: By special request it was asked that I do a sort of “speed round” ...

What is the toughest Big East venue to play in?

Jay Wright: Creighton

VUSports: What is the toughest Big East team to prepare for?

Jay Wright: Creighton

VUSports: What is your favorite Big East city to visit?

Jay Wright: New York

VUSports: Who is your toughest Big East recruiting competitor?

Jay Wright: Probably still Georgetown.

VUSports: Who is your toughest national recruiting competitor?

Jay Wright: Duke - we still want those guys that they get - Jermaine Samuels was good for us because they wanted him.  We want to be in that situation to battle with them and Carolina.  Maryland has become one too because of the area we recruit in.

VUSports: Who is the best defensive player you ever coached against?

Jay Wright:  By far, it was Kris Dunn.  He was the only guy where we had to switch who would bring the ball up rather than have the guy he was guarding bring the ball up - we didn’t do it all the time but to have to think about that and to have to run offense on the other side of the zone than he was on.

VUSports: Who is the best offensive player you ever coached against?

Jay Wright:  Kris Dunn again because of individually what he could do.  And, looking back, Marcus Hatten, he was just a nightmare and you can go back to the old days of Siva at Louisville - guarding him in pick-and-roll at the top was just brutal.

VUSports: If Donte Divincenzo played Michael Jordan in Delaware, who would win?

Jay Wright: [laughing]  If the game is at Salesianum, I think Donte would win.  Everyone there would be behind him.

VUSports: … and this is assuming Michael Jordan “today”?  …

Jay Wright: [laughing] Yes.  Did I really come up with that name?

Mike Sheridan: Yes.

VUSports: And it did make for one of the funniest moments on your radio show when you asked Donte where he got that nickname and he replied “that was you, Coach”.  Coach, thank you so much for your time and another fabulous season!
