Villanova and UCONN to play three games ...

As mentioned on VUSports subscriber board earlier this week, Villanova will play UCONN in 3 upcoming games - including once at MSG. Here are the details from Villanova's formal release:

VILLANOVA, Pa – The Villanova Wildcats and Connecticut Huskies built a rich catalogue of basketball memories over more than three decades spent as members of the BIG EAST. Now, the two programs are set to meet again as part of a three year agreement announced today.

Villanova will travel to Connecticut to meet the Huskies at the XL Center in Hartford on Jan. 20, 2018 (2017-18). A neutral site game between the two teams will take place at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Dec. 22, 2018 (2018-19). UConn will then face the Wildcats at the Wells Fargo Center on Jan. 18, 2020 (2019-20).

“UConn and Villanova have enjoyed exciting games over a long history,” said Wildcats head coach Jay Wright. “This series honors the great tradition of Villanova and Connecticut basketball.

“Facing UConn was always a challenge and will be again. Coach Ollie was one of the toughest and smartest players in Big East history and he instills those same qualities in his team.”

“We are very excited to renew our series with Villanova,” added Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie, “and especially pleased to be able to play one of the games in the tremendous basketball atmosphere of Madison Square Garden.

“We have had so many memorable games against Villanova over the years and Coach Wright obviously has one of the very best programs in the country. I know our fans will be thrilled to see the Wildcats back on our schedule.”

From 1981-2013, the two schools met 59 times as members of the BIG EAST Conference with the Wildcats owning a 31-28 edge. Among the Villanova highlights in the series were a pair of wins in the 1994-95 season, the first a 96-73 triumph in Storrs and the second a 94-78 win to claim the program’s first BIG EAST Tournament championship at Madison Square Garden. On Feb. 13, 2006, Villanova defeated the No.1 ranked Huskies 69-64 and 12 months later Scottie Reynolds scored 40 points to help VU to a 78-74 win in Storrs.

The Wildcats and Huskies last met in the 2014 NCAA Tournament with UConn registering a 77-65 second round victory on its way to a national championship.

The complete Villanova non-conference schedule is expected to be released in the coming weeks. The final 2017-18 slate, with all dates, will be released in September.
