WR Bryce Thompson is the first commit in Virginia Tech's 2018 class

Bryce Thompson committed to Virginia Tech on Saturday and the Columbia (S.C.) Ben Lippen receiver spoke with Scout about his decision.

Bryce Thompson is headed to Virginia Tech.

"I'm very excited about my commitment and thankful for the opportunity," said the 6-foot, 180-pound Thompson. "It's a big-time program and I just love Virginia Tech -- the facilities, coaches and players.

"The campus is also beautiful and the atmosphere is great. I actually have a good friend -- (long snapper) Wright Bynum -- who plays there and he's also told me nothing but good things."

The coaching staff played a pivotal role in his decision.

"I have a great relationship with the entire staff, but I'm the closest with (tight ends) coach (James) Shibest, who's recruiting me," Thompson said. "He reminds me of my old high school coach Tom Knotts. He cares a lot about football and me as a man and as a person. We just have a great bond."

The Ben Lippen standout is excited about playing for head coach Justin Fuente.

"He really cares about his players and he's a great all-around coach," Thompson said.  "I'm really looking forward to playing for him and I think he's going to turn Virginia Tech into a powerhouse again."

Although there is a long time until signing day 2018, do not look for Thompson change his mind.

"I'm 100 percent committed to Virginia Tech and done with the recruiting process," he said. "I won't be visiting any other schools."
