Four-star offensive lineman Avery Jones gives latest in recruitment.

2018 four-star lineman Avery Jones is getting more looks, including from Virginia Tech. But who is he looking at?

A few schools have offered and received visits already. But in many ways, the recruitment of Havelock (NC) four-star offensive lineman Avery Jones is still getting started.

To this point, Jones claims offers from Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina and Charlotte. The Hokies were the most recent on that list with an offer Tuesday.

Jones isn’t claiming any standouts yet, but with more visits on the way, he’s inching closer to that mark.

“I guess how the chemistry and the football team is in the locker room is the main thing I look for,” Jones said. “Academic-wise, where a school is at, too. I don’t have a major picked yet.”

Jones said he’s spoken briefly with assistant coaches Charley Wiles and Vance Vice. And though he hasn’t visited Blacksburg yet, he hopes to soon.

“They were kinda just introducing themselves and we were just having a conversation, getting to know them,” Jones said. “I talked to them over the phone and we didn’t really talk about much. They just told me I had a full scholarship.”

This fall, Jones said he hopes to set up game visits for Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. A few aspects of the Hokies already jump out to him.

“I think it would be a nice change of scenery,” Jones said. “They’re in the mountains, so something different than I’m used to.”

Of the visits he’s taken so far, Jones said he’s been most impressed by the Tar Heels. He took part in North Carolina’s Freak Show camp this summer.

“I like UNC and I already liked them before, so it wasn’t really different from any campus I’d been to,” Jones said. “I like how it’s close to home and how the team is on the rise, how they went to the ACC championship.”

Jones said he hasn’t given any thoughts to any decision. He hopes to continue to take visits and be open to other opportunities that come in this season.

“I feel like I need to get quicker, stronger and work on open field blocks,” Jones said. “It’s really just working hard at practice and going hard.”
