2018 tight end James Mitchelll visited Blacksburg recently, but has a busy schedule with more visits.

Mitchell has a visit this weekend and two of the next three. He also goes in detail about seeing Virginia Tech again, recently.

Mark another visit down to Virginia Tech. On Sept. 17, Union (Va.) 2018 tight end James Mitchell was back in Blacksburg, for the Hokies’ win over Boston College.

Mitchell has now taken three visits to Virginia Tech this year. Last week, though, he saw another big game and more visits are upcoming.

The Hokies have maintained a high position with Mitchell. This summer, he told TheVTZone.com that he grew up a Virginia Tech fan. His most recent trip to see the Hokies was his first game there.

“I thought it was really good,” Mitchell said. “That was the first time I had been there for a game as a recruit. It was a good time seeing the atmosphere again. They played really well, scored a lot of points, so that was good to see.”

Mitchell’s parents also made the trip, their first there as well.

“It was their first time for a game,” he said. “They enjoyed it. That’s about as much as they said, though. They’re just really keeping everything, as far as the recruiting process up to me.”

Mitchell was last in Blacksburg in July for the Hokies’ Blacksburg Bash. He also visited for a spring practice earlier this year. Those two visits gave him a bit more insight than his most recent.

“I wouldn’t say I learned anything new,” Mitchell said. “When I went in the spring, Coach (James) Shibest and Coach (Justin) Fuente sat down with me and showed me some of their film when they were at Memphis, how they used their tight ends. They’re basically using Bucky (Hodges) the same way. Getting to see it in action was better, though.”

Hodges has been a big selling point for Virginia Tech. And so far, Mitchell said he’s liked what he’s seen in his use.

“I talked to Coach Shibest, Coach Wiles and Coach Fuente on my visit,” Mitchell said. “Mainly, I’d say they just want me to come to Tech. They told me how much they like me and wanted me up there. They wanted me to pay attention to how they use Bucky. That’s how they’d use me if I went there. They just told me about the fan base and how tight-knit it is up there with the whole Blacksburg community.”

The Hokies aren’t Mitchell’s only option, however. He also has offers from Virginia, Vanderbilt and James Madison. Last weekend, he saw another that could be close to offering, Clemson, for the Tigers’ win over Louisville. Mitchell also attended Clemson’s game against Florida State last season.

“It was a great game, getting to see it,” Mitchell said. “The atmosphere, even when Clemson got down, their fans stayed in it. They pulled out the win. Coach Swinney has built a great program down there. He cares about the kids he has. He said no matter if you leave early, he chases you down and makes sure you get your education. That shows he cares, not just about football.”

This weekend, Mitchell plans to visit Duke, despite the oncoming storms from Hurricane Matthew. He said the Blue Devils could be close to offering.

“They’ve had a pretty successful seasons the past couple of years,” Mitchell said. “When I went to visit in July, they sat me down, showed me film like Virginia Tech did. They use their tight ends a lot, so that’s exciting to see.”

Mitchell has a busy month ahead. He’s also scheduled visits for Oct. 22 to Virginia and Oct. 29 to Notre Dame.

But as far as narrowing down his recruitment or any decision, Mitchell hasn’t planned that far ahead.

“It’s all still kinda even,” he said. “I’m just really taking my time, making sure I’ll make the right decisions and everything. No early leaders.”
