Virginia Tech gets shredded on defense in 31-17 loss at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A flat start, coupled with a lot of yards given up on defense in a lot of plays proved to be way too much for the Hokies to overcome in a 31-17 loss Saturday.

It had been a long time since Virginia Tech was as big of a favorite as it was entering its game Saturday at Syracuse, at 20.5 points by Las Vegas oddsmakers. Since 2003, against Temple, to be exact.

But the Hokies looked like anything but a top 25 team. A week after allowing North Carolina the fewest yards it had in four years, Virginia Tech was diced up repeatedly by the Orange in a 31-17 loss.

Syracuse rolled up 561 yards of total offense. And it did that in 100 plays.

By the end of the game, including the Orange's final touchdown run, the Hokies looked gassed. Typically, it might be a bad to play on a short week, as Virginia Tech does Thursday, when it hosts Miami. But this time, it might be good to get over this one quickly.
