Hokies get most out of possessions against Syracuse

Virginia Tech had a season low six turnovers against the Orange Tuesday. But what does that say about the Hokies? Coach Buzz Williams talked about that after the game.

It was a rather careful game by Virginia Tech. Or at least, the Hokies made the most of when they had the ball.

In addition to only six turnovers, they had 20 assists on 28 made field goals. A team-high six assists also came from a non-guard, Chris Clarke. That came in 70 possessions, as coach Buzz Williams pointed out, lower than Virginia Tech's average of 29 possessions per game.

But when you're that efficient, you can get by with not having the ball as much. And taking care of it, as well.

"Mathematically, it's gonna be a shorter game, because they're gonna be in zone make or miss," Williams said of Syracuse. "Not that the value decreases, regardless of how many possessions there are, but there's gonna be less. Our turnover rate in the last two road games was 23 percent. Our OER was great, but one out of every four times, we're giving them the ball.

"When you talk about the offense, that's what we were focused on, that we need a shot every possession."
