Virginia Tech hits bog shots late to hold on at Clemson

The Hokies hit the shots they needed to, including at the free throw line Sunday night, to take an 82-81 win over the Tigers.

Senior guard Seth Allen led Virginia Tech with a team-high 17 points Sunday night. But it was the last three of that total that proved most beneficial.

Allen hit a contested three-pointer from the left wing with 31 seconds left, as the Hokies held on for an 82-81 win over Clemson, their first ACC road win of the season. Virginia Tech also calmly knocked down all six of their free throws after that point in the win.

The Hokies led for all but just under three minutes of the game and shot 54.7 percent from the floor. They also hit 16 of 17 free throws for the game.

Virginia Tech held a 32-29 rebounding edge, but the Tigers were able to hang around thanks to nine offensive rebounds that resulted in 11 second chance points.

Senior forward Zach LeDay added 16 points, while sophomore forward Chris Clarke again came off the bench to start, for the second straight game. He finished with eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Hokies are back on the road Thursday. They'll tip-off at 8 pm ET on ESPN at North Carolina, ranked No. 9 in this week's Associated Press poll.
