“We got there on Saturday and left yesterday,” said Ricky DeBerry Sr. “When we got there, they gave us a tour. After that, we sat down and talked with coach (James) Franklin, (defensive coordinator) coach (Bob) Shoop and (linebackers) coach (Brent) Pry.
”The coaches were really down to earth. Every time we saw them on campus, they talked us. They discussed the depth chart with Ricky and where he would play, which is Mike linebacker. It was our first time meeting with that staff and we felt really good about it.”
They spent some time one-on-one with Franklin.
”He congratulated Ricky on his success so far and told him he’d love to have him at Penn State,” DeBerry Sr. said. “He said he felt like Ricky could help them out a lot on defense and told us he was trying to build a national championship team. He also told about the success they had recruiting in the 2015 class so far.”
While on campus, DeBerry spent a lot of time with Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenburg.
”Ricky developed a pretty good relationship with him before he left FUMA (Fork Union Military Academy),” DeBerry Sr. said. "So when we got there, he called Christian and they hung out. He said he had a blast with Christian.”
Next month, DeBerry, who is down to 20 schools, will trim his list down again.
”He’s going to narrow it down to eight or nine schools,” DeBerry Sr. said. “There are some schools that are standing out at this time, but I don’t think he’s ready to name them.”
