“It’s my dream. I have been a UVa fan my whole life.”
Hanback made his pledge to the Cavaliers seconds after receiving an official offer from the Wahoos.
“Me and my parents got up and went to coach London’s office, and he was telling us the plans for UVa, and all the good commits they have. He said ‘you are the type of guy that we want here. You fit the bill-you got character; you work hard; we don’t have to worry about you going to class; it is the kind of guy that we want. I want you to be part of the family; we are going to offer you’
“Right when he said that I said, ‘alright coach, I’m ready to be part of the family. This is where I want to be.’ We got up and hugs around. It was awesome.
“When he (London) said, ‘we were going to offer you’, I got butterflies in my stomach,” said the 6-foot-4, 270 pounder. “The dream has come true, and I was ready to go. Thank God that this happened.”
Hanback plays on both sides of the ball for Patrick Henry, and Virginia likes that versatility that he would bring to the next level.
“They told me right now they offered me as lineman. Later on in the recruiting process they are going to decide whether or not they are going to make me O-line or D-line.”
Hanback does not mind which side of the ball he plays on, as long as the team has success, “it is wherever I can help the team.”
Although he is being recruited on both sides of the ball, Hanback is very excited at the possibility of working with offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim.
“He knows so much, and UVa is known for their offensive line. They put offensive lineman in the NFL every year…to have him as a coach and learn from him and just become a better player hopefully.”
Hanback has already got acquainted with some of the 2015 commits during his visit on Saturday, “they are good guys, type of guys that coach London wants to build on- good players, Good men. It is a good family to be part of.” But he is also excited to hope add a few more recruits to the list.
If I seem them (UVa targets) around at football things, I feel like I need to go up to them and say, look man I know you have other offers but UVa, especially the guys in my area, in the Richmond area, UVa is only an hour away. It is a place that feels like home; you will be part of a good family here; and we are going to take care of each other; and we are going to win some games and do great things at UVa.”
Hanback is the 19th pledge in Virginia’s 2015 class. He is still undecided if he will enroll in January.
“I don’t know yet. That is something I need to discuss with my parents and my counselor.”
