Early last week Sean Auwae did not have Virginia Cavaliers on his radar, but now the Kapolei (HI) High School center is now taking a closer look at the Cavaliers. Auwae picked up an offer from UVA on Friday.
Auwae admits he needs to research the Cavs, however, he is familiar with one thing.
“I know that the coach is from BYU,” said Auwae. “They are heavily recruiting me so he asked if would consider there. He [offensive line coach Garrett Tujague] coached my high school coach, so there is a connection there."
Before Tujague joined Bronco Mendenhall on Virginia’s staff, he was able to create a good relationship with the three-star center from Hawaii.
“I’ve known his since my sophomore year, actually, so I’m very close with him. I know he respects that it would be my decision weather it would be Virginia or not. I know would still be there for me because of the character he shows.”
Virginia is certainly a long way from home for the 6-foot-3, 290 pounder. But for him distance is not what matters.
“Location is not really that much of a big deal to me,” he said. “How I feel with the coaches and coaching staff as a whole. I want to see if they are true, family orientated type of coaches that really care about their players.
“ I have a pros and cons chart for most of the schools that I’m considering,” he added. “So I have location, rank, rank academically, if they have the major I like, stuff like that.
Business, marketing or sports marketing, something like that.”
For now he has set his official visit to Louisville for the 15th next month, after already taking an official to Vanderbilt a couple of weeks ago, but an official visit to see Virginia is not out of the question.
“That’s something in the works right now, trying to visit UVA. Working on it, seeing what other officials I’ll take.
“Before I got the offer, my top three were Vanderbilt, Louisville, and Hawaii,” he said. “So I consider new schools and I don’t shut anybody out, so I just got the offer and I’m looking into it.”
