The game went back and forth between the squads but with under 2 minutes left in the game HPC went ahead 28-21 with a long drive down the field. Wardlow and company though felt they had enough time to orchestrate a drive of their own. Indeed they did as Wardlow used his scrambling ability to buy time for his receivers to get open in the late stages of the contest. The result was a 37 yard touchdown pass to David Seawell making the score 28-27 HPC. The Spartans head coach Bob Sapp opted to go for the victory on a two point conversion. Mount Tabor converted the conversion but due to a holding penalty they were forced to kick the extra point sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period HPC drew first blood with short touchdown pass but the extra point kick was missed leaving the door open for the Spartans. Wardlow saw the miss as the chance his team needed to go ahead and try to seize the victor as he stated, "When they missed that kick, I just felt like it was our game."
The confident future UVa quarterback looked to his favorite target wide receiver Ryan Taylor. The two connected on a 10 yard touchdown pass and the made extra point propelled the Spartans to the win 35-34.
The jubilant Spartans who are now 12-1 on the season will now face #1 seed Grimsley HS (NC) next week in what has the makings of a tremendous battle in the state 4A quarterfinals.
