Sunshine State lineman commits

Shelldon Lewinson, defensive tackle from Armwood High School, has trimmed his eight offers to a single decision, accepting his scholarship offer from Wake Forest. DeaconSports caught up with the senior just hours after the commitment.

"I'd looked at colleges, and I'd seen all the schools I narrowed down to my top three," the 6-1, 240-pound athlete said. "I thought about the benefits of committing soon, and that other colleges wouldn't be calling be during school time. It'll let me focus on the season."

Lewinson continued about becoming a Deac.

"The coaches who helped in making my decision were coach Mac and defensive back Coach Russ," he said. "When I spoke to them it felt like it would be a family; that I wouldn't feel detached from the team, and I would be a part of the Demon Deacon crew."

The Seffner, Fla. native's list includes offers from North Texas, Western Michigan, Bethune Cookman and Eastern Michigan among others.

"They've kept in contact with me, and have been having conversation with me," he explained. "But I just felt better being a Demon Deacon."

Lewinson described his interest in the school.

"What I like about the school is the education," he said. "I like that they have a high academic rank for the medical field, with me wanting to be a doctor. I want to work on the brain."

The athlete also has sight for his purpose on the field.

"I see myself playing a nose guard position, and they run the same defensive scheme with a 3-4 set defense, so it wouldn't be that different," he explained. "It wouldn't be that much of a learning phase compared to learning something completely new. I would be able to start helping out the team sooner."

Lewinson also has some goals set for before college.

"I'm going to try to beat every average defensive player's goals, including double digits tackles- about 80," he added.
