Player Spotlight: Dante Blackmon
"I've been to Appalachian State three times," said Dante Blackmon. "They've recruited me hard since last summer. They have some guys there I played high school ball with. I'm in love with the place. I'll be there on January 20th with my parents on an official visit."
Blackmon is also being recruited by Wake Forest, Marshall, Buffalo, and Indiana. He's surprised he hasn't received more interest despite solid seasons at Eastside and national recognition.
"Most of the recruiting sites have me listed as a three star player," said Blackmon. "I thought I was going to blow up with offers, but things haven't fallen into place. With Wake Forest, I was leaning that way for awhile, but I haven't heard from them in two weeks. It's getting late in the game to not be hearing anything."
Blackmon was named First Team All-Region (Georgia 4-AAA) on offense and defense as a senior. He made more than 40 catches for 640 yards and six touchdowns at wide receiver for the Eastside Eagles. He had six pass breakups in the secondary and four interceptions.
"My numbers weren't quite as good as last year," Blackmon said. "I've always thought I was a decent route runner but this year I was way better. My speed improved to a 4.36 [40-yard dash], and as a result I was more explosive. At cornerback I didn't have as many picks as last year. I did a lot of jam and release and gambled more than usual."
Blackmon played in the Georgia East/West Senior All-Star Bowl in December held in the Georgia Dome. He played solely at cornerback and made four tackles and three pass break-ups.
"There were six cornerbacks, so we rotated in and out," Blackmon said of the All-Star game. "I got in every fourth series. It's was a lot of fun though and great competition."
Although his official visit to Appalachian State isn't for another couple of weeks, he may not wait that long to make a call on his future college.
"I'm going to do it pretty soon," said Blackmon on committing. "I just have to get it all set with my Mom and Dad before I make it official. I'll probably have my mind made up in the next week and a half. Right now, it's all Appalachian State. They want me and said how excited they would be to have me commit."
Blackmon leaves Eastside as the second leading wide receiver in school history in career yards. He was named team MVP as a senior and wore No. 5 for the Eagles.
