Deacons offer sophomore LB

Recruits are picking up offers earlier and earlier these days and it's becoming common for sophomores to start to step into the spotlight.

Saint Clairsville (Ohio) is home to one of the top sophomore prospects in the Buckeye State in Michael Ferns, a 6-3, 235-pound inside linebacker.

Wake Forest is one of several ACC schools, along with Duke, Boston College and Virginia, that have already offered Ferns. It's probably a good bet that Ferns will blow up because of his size, speed and physicality, so expect Midwestern recruiting juggernauts like Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and others to jump into the mix later.

"When I go down to visit some of the schools in North Carolina I'll check Wake Forest out," Ferns told Deacon Sports. "I haven't had a whole lot of contact with them but I'm going to try to get down there when the school year is over."

Ferns said a coach from Wake Forest stopped by Saint Clairsville last week. He's had a little contact with the staff and is intrigued by what he's heard.

"I've heard they're more of an academically-oriented school. Like I said, I'll find out more about them later on but they sound good from what I've heard so far.

"I'm really trying to find a college that fits me academically and athletically. I want to go out with a good degree from a respected college so I can find a good job afterwards," he said.

Ferns added that he's looking for a college that is a large part of the town around it, rather than a college that makes a small dent in a huge city.
