Cameron Gardner talks decision

Wake Forest gained their first commitment for the 2013 class with Cameron Gardner, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive lineman from Southern Nash High School in Bailey, N.C. Gardner said he had just made his second campus visit three days prior which convinced him to make his verbal pledge to become a Demon Deacon. He talked about the decision here...

"This morning I committed to Coach Himebauch," said Cameron Gardner. "When I was there it felt homey, and they treated me like family. The combination of great academics and the level of football played in the ACC helped sell me on the program as well."

Gardner plays right tackle for the Southern Nash Firebirds. He is open to the position he will play at Wake Forest.

"My [Wake forest] offer came about a month ago," Gardner stated. "They said they liked that I was young and think I could improve a lot in the next couple of years.

"I've talked to them about playing tackle or guard. Three days ago I was on campus with my Mom and Dad, and I made another trip about a month ago. I'm hoping to go back again soon this summer.

"Right now I have offers from ECU, North Carolina A&T, Gardner-Webb, and Old Dominion. I've been receiving a lot of interest from Duke, and some from Virginia Tech."

Gardner just finished his spring workouts with his high school team. Last year the Firebird squad went 7-4 on the season. Gardner said he feels primed for a big senior finish.

"Spring went well," said Gardner. "I feel like I'm playing more aggressive and getting faster off the ball. I just want to continue playing that way and help our team by being a leader on the line."

Gardner also throws shotput on the track team. He reports an impressive 4.2 GPA heading into his senior year.
