Looking ahead to the 2014 class the Demon Deacons are trying to make a major play for Quincy Wilson, another top athlete from the state. The 6-2, 195-pound corner from Fort Lauderdale had a big sophomore season at the University School. He's got more than a dozen offers with schools like Florida and LSU already in the mix.
Normally Wake Forest would be on the outside looking in, at least if you're looking at distant history, but the Deacs are getting a serious look.
"I called their coach when I got the offer and I told him I'd be keeping in touch," Wilson told DeaconSports. "That's a school I'll look at for sure. I'm going to go visit them and see if what they have fits me."
And what kind of a fit is Wilson looking for? "If I can develop a good relationship with the coaches and if I like them. If they have what I want to study and if I can play early," he said, citing three factors that many recruits point to.
Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Ohio State are the three schools Wilson has visited so far and he said each of those visits was productive and enjoyable.
While many of the top players from Florida pay lip service to out-of-state schools only to ultimately sign with one of the Big Three, Wilson says he's got genuine interest in schools both near and far.
"I'm looking at in-state and out-of-state schools," he noted.
Wilson's last trip was to Florida State for a camp. The Seminoles haven't offered yet but they could be one of his next offers. Their coaches told him they would watch him closely this year.
