"They embarrassed us on national TV," Swinney said, during his Sunday teleconference.
The Wolfpack [6-4, 3-3 ACC] have dropped two out of their last three games, are in third-place in the ACC Atlantic Division.
"N.C. State is capable of beating anybody. That's the only loss that Florida State has. This is a team that is very dangerous," Swinney said. "They've got an outstanding quarterback. They've always got good skill. They're second in the league in scoring defense."
Senior quarterback Mike Glennon has completed 239 of 417 passes for 2,910 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Running backs Shadrach Thornton and Tony Creecy have combined to rush for 870 yards and six touchdowns.
Wide receiver Bryan Underwood is second among ACC receivers with 10 touchdown catches. Quintin Payton's receptions per game and receiving yards per game averages are in the top among ACC receivers.
The defense is 10th in the country with three sacks per game.
"This is a big challenge for us. We'll have to play very well. We're coming off a performance against these guys last year that was really poor," Swinney said.
The only reminder about last year's game will be the film.
"You always look at last year's tape when you play an opponent that you're playing every year, when the coaching staff is the same, you always look at that film, because it's real tape of you versus them," Swinney said. "You can see some matchup things and you can see some schematic things and you can compare that to what you've seen all throughout this year."
About that game last year, there won't be many fond moments to relive.
"They know that we went up there and, heck, we turned it over three times in a row inside the 20-something yard line," Swinney said. "N.C. State did a great job of taking advantage of it, momentum and energy. They just took the game over, but that was last year.
"It has nothing to do with this year. It really doesn't. That revenge stuff and all that, that don't get you very far. It's how you play the game. It's about how you prepare this week."
Swinney noted the implications for Saturday's game.
"We haven't won 10 regular season games in 31 years. We have a chance to do that," he said. "We win this week, in three out of four years we'll be able to claim being Atlantic Division champions. I didn't even know that until today, to be honest with you.
"If we win this game, even in Florida State wins, we get an Atlantic Division trophy. They, by the tie breaker, get to go play in the game. That's a great accomplishment for our guys."
