Lassiter: Coaching & Academics

Wake Forest got the opportunity to host Lassiter High School (Marietta, Ga.) cornerback Chris Murphy. On his visit to Winston-Salem, picked up an offer bringing his early total to 12. Murphy spoke to DeaconSports on how the trip went.

"It went real good," said Murphy. "It was about two weeks ago. We spent most of the day there with Coach Knorr as our tour guide. He showed us the facilities and told us about the program. I got a good feeling about Wake Forest. The coaches all seem like good people.

"They offered me when I was there. They told me they liked my footwork, transition, smooth backpedal and my physical play. I asked a lot of questions [to Coach Knorr] about the defense they run and really like what he said. I think Wake has a solid program."

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back who said he regularly runs a 4.4 40-yard dash has made visits to UNC, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, and Louisville among others. He made the trip to Wake Forest with his father.

In his second year as a starter for the Lassiter Trojans, Murphy raised his game and, in turn, is receiving national recruiting attention from SEC and ACC powerhouses to the Pac-12.

"I made 25 tackles, three interceptions, 15 passes defended," he said. "I felt like I improved a lot on my technique and playing both off-man and man coverage."

Murphy is being recruited hard by many of the aforementioned programs but isn't quite ready to name his favorites just yet.

"When I take my visits I'm looking at a program that's going to fit me well," explained Murphy. "I want to go to a school that has great coaches there who are going to help me be succesful at the next level. I'm also looking for a school that offers good academics. I'll probably sit down and come out with my top five within the next few months."

Demon Deacon fans would argue that criteria fits their school to a T. They'll be glad they got involved with this one early as Murphy projects to be one of the top defensive backs in the class of 2014.
