Deacons offer Thomas

Coleman Thomas is a hot name in recruiting circles. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound offensive lineman of Fort Chiswell High School in Max Meadows, Va. received his eighth offer on Wednesday when he received a phone call from Wake Forest assistant coach Jonathan Himebauch. An excited Thomas spoke to DeaconSports about his thoughts on Wake Forest.

"Coach Himey told me he had been watching my film all day," said Thomas. "He liked that I'm a blue collar player who gets after it and said they were ready to offer me this evening. They like me at center, but I'm willing to play wherever.

"I've been keeping in touch with Wake Forest ever since I attended their summer camp last year. They offer one of the best educations around. Coach Grobe, I believe, is an excellent coach who is getting things turned around. I expect good things are going to come for Wake Forest football. I'm planning on making it back to Winston-Salem for a spring practice."

At Fort Chiswell in Wythe County, Thomas has started at center for three season on varsity and hasn't missed a game. In 2012, he was named All-District (Virginia Group A Division II Western) at offensive line and middle linebacker. Thomas, however, knows paying center is his bread and butter.

"I take great pride in my leadership," he said. "Some of the younger guys look to me on the field. Playing center, you know, I have to make the right call at the line and get us in the right protection. I like setting the pace of the offense with the ball in my hand. Last year we had a 2000 yard rusher but we run a balanced attack. It was a good year [in 2012] we won 11 games but lost on a blown play in the sectional finals."

The first offer for Thomas came from West Virginia. Since then, he's received offers from Marshall, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. As for now, Thomas says he's "wide open."

"I was kind of hoping to make an early decision but my recruiting has taken off here recently," Thomas stated. "I'm just going to wait for now and enjoy the recruiting process. I'm going to make spring practices to Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia Tech Wake Forest and try to get to some of the new schools that have offered as well.

"I'm looking for the place that feels like it can be home for the next four or five years. I like a coaching staff that takes you in and treats you like family. I'm hoping to go somewhere with the chance for early playing time and get a great education in the process."

Thomas is a 3.2 GPA honor roll student at Fort Chiswell. He averaged 15.8 points-per-game and 10 rebounds-per-game at center for the basketball team. This spring he'll return to the baseball diamond. As a sophomore, Thomas hit .503 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs.
