He wasn't 5'10 and 170-pounds at the time but the Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith student-athlete remembered how respectful and effective the coaches were when he camped.
"When I went to Wake Forest my freshman year I really liked it," he said. "I was just there for a camp and I remember a lot. I really liked the running back coach and [I also like] Coach Himebauch. I like him. He's a pretty cool guy and straight forward with you."
McClease has grown a lot since then and he has improved in a big way. Last year he rushed for 1,000 yards and now he has an offer from the Demon Deacs. Virginia Tech, Temple and Old Dominion have offered too.
McClease may have had a good early experience at Wake Forest but he could be tough to pry away from the Hokies.
"For right now Virginia Tech is at the top of my list. That's just right now. When I went and visited I liked the whole facility and the coaches. I hit it off with the new offensive coordinator. I want to say that was back in early June," he said.
Syracuse, Michigan, Maryland and North Carolina State have also told McClease or his coaches that they are monitoring him and tracking his progress. They could initiate contact in the future and while Virginia Tech leads the field McClease hopes to have more options.
He has not visited any schools since his early summer trip to Virginia Tech and instead has been working out and preparing with his teammates.
