Greensboro Day 2018 guard Will Dillard came to Wake’s Budd Gym Friday morning to catch Danny Manning’s Deacs practice and liked what he saw.
“I thought it was a great practice,” Dillard said. “Even though they said it was a pretty soft practice, with them getting ready for the Bahamas I feel like the guys were very intense and were going after it pretty hard. They definitely showed me in a short amount of time, how to get things done in order and fashion.”
Dillard has gotten attention from schools such as Notre Dame and UNC Wilmington, but for now the Deacs are his sole Power 5 offer.
He’s been to campus earlier this summer for a camp, and got a full tour of the campus then. He’s holding offers from Wake, Appalachian State and Old Dominion.
“Out of all the schools I’ve been offered, Wake Forest is definitely in the top range. I love the system they have there, and now after being in practice and seeing the chemistry the guys have, I feel I would fit in perfectly.” Dillard said. “That’s how the chemistry is at my school now. After seeing how the guys get along together, Wake Forest is pretty high among the schools that have offered me.”
He said it’s clear the Deacs know they have to go hard 100 percent of the time while on the practice court.
“I have a great vibe when I’m there,” Dillard said. “I felt a great energy watching them practice.”
He said he’s connected with several players on the team, but is closest to Brandon Childress. Assistant coach Brett Ballard is his main coaching contact on staff.
“He told me that I would fit perfectly into the program,” Dillard said. “He said I wouldn’t be a one-dimensional player, and that everybody’s style is flexible. He said they would be able to play my style of offense, with pick-and-roll, transition, get it and go type of offense. I feel like I fit well into it.
“While watching them work on transition, I felt like that’s definitely the style I like.”
Dillard still has plenty of time to make a college decision, and isn’t in a big rush.
“As of right now, I’m still looking and believe I’ll get more offers,” he said. “But right now Wake Forest is one of the top tier schools I’m considering right now.”
