Cade Carney suffered a knee injury during practice Wednesday, but the common assumption was that it would be not that big of a deal.
But after getting progressively worse Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Carney went for testing where it was established he wouldn't be able to play today against Delaware with a strained knee ligament.
It's a huge loss for the Deacs, as Carney had established himself as a legitimate threat on the ground, rushing for 108 yards and three touchdowns on the road against Duke last week. He was the first freshman to rush for three touchdowns in a game for the Deacs since Chris Barclay achieved the same feat in 2002.
Sophomore Matt Colburn is expected to get the start against Delaware, with Tyler Bell and Rocky Reid also in the mix during the contest.
Carney is not expected to miss that much time, but his status against Indiana next week is still in question.
