FOREST CITY, N.C. — Shelby High School (N.C.) linebacker Dax Hollifield made his presence felt early and often Friday night as his school routed Chase High 48-17.
“We started the game really well. They tried to run the ball at first, but after that they started passing the ball,” Hollifield said. “Overall, I thought our defense played pretty well.”
The next day, Hollifield was set to visit Wake Forest as the Deacs hosted Delaware. Hollifield has been to Winston-Salem several times, and his father, Aubrey Hollifield, played on the defensive line for the Deacs from the late 80s through 1991.
“I just want to see how they play. If they get big-time football, that’s where I want to be. I want to be somewhere with big-time football,” Dax Hollifield said. “I think the coaching staff is doing good, and they can change the atmosphere down there.
“I want to be like a regular guy. I like going to all the games and stuff, but I want to take it in like a regular person.”
There’s been talk that Hollifield was down to just two potential landing spots — North Carolina or Virginia Tech.
When asked who was still in play, Hollifield answered, “Wake Forest for sure,” as well as UNC, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and Tennessee.
“Those are probably my top five,” he said.
On Virginia Tech:
Hollifield: “First of all, I like the defensive coordinator, Bud Foster — he’s the best. I like the gameday atmosphere.”
Hollifield: “I like all the coaches. I live in North Carolina, and everybody is a Carolina fan. No matter where you go, they read something about you and know who you are in North Carolina. That’s what I like about it.”
Shelby moved to 5-0 with the win Friday over Chase.
“As a team, we’re doing great. It’s one of the best teams Shelby High School has ever had,” Hollifield said. “Kings Mountain next week. That will be a big test.
“I’m going all right. I could be better. I miss a couple tackles here or there. I have to work on breaking down and not staying so high.”
