WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — He isn’t sporting a mohawk anymore, but a smile has returned to his face.
Wake freshman running back Cade Carney was back in uniform for the Deacs Tuesday morning before practice, and very well could be back in the lineup Saturday when the Deacs host Syracuse at 7 p.m. at BB&T Field.
“I hope Cade is going to play. I don’t think (quarterback) Kendall (Hinton) is. It’s not definite yet on either,” Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. “We’re starting to get Cade reps and get him going in practice. Kendall was doing some things on the side, and we’ll see how he felt. Maybe he’s available in an emergency, but John will start the game at quarterback.
“We may have Cade or we may not.”
Cade led the Deacs with 108 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns in the 24-14 road with against Duke, but has missed the last three games with a sprained knee.
“He looked good (in practice) We’re going to be healthier this week than maybe the second or third week,” Clawson said. “We have guys coming back. We came out of the last game in pretty good shape.”
There are many factors that will determine if Carney sees the field Saturday, and if he gets the start.
“Yeah, but if he’s 70 percent — we have to see where he is,” Clawson said. “Today was the first day, and you guys are going to nailing me with that question with Kendall as soon as you see him out there.
“We probably won’t tell you, and you’ll find out Saturday.”
