Deacons Conduct Third Scrimmage at Groves Stadium

In the Grove: The Demon Deacons conducted their third of four preseason scrimmages at Groves Stadium. The scrimmage lasted slightly longer than an hour under welcomed overcast skies and temperatures in the low-70's. The scrimmage featured mostly the first and second team units, featuring highlight plays by several individuals. After initially being bottled up on a running play, Dominic Anderson cut upfield and scored a touchdown from about ten yards out against the first team defense. Moments later, the first team offense retaliated with a touchdown of their own. On a designed rollout, Cory Randolph ran into trouble but cut back against the grain and found Anthony Young on a deep post pattern. On the final play of the scrimmage, Young hauled in another Randolph touchdown pass. This time, the senior wide receiver out-jumped two defensive backs in the corner of the endzone for the score.

Prior to the scrimmage, the team went through individual drills and worked on the kicking game. Ryan Plackemeier boomed several punts and Matt Wisnosky showed good distance on both field goals and kickoffs. However, the field goal block unit was able to break through and block a pair of attempts. Eric King got the first one and Josh Gattis was the second culprit.

In the afternoon, the Deacons returned to their on-campus facility and worked out without pads in position groups. The abbriviated session began at 4:15 and finished at 6:00 p.m. The team will conduct their final scrimmage before the season opener on Saturday at Groves Stadium beginning at noon.

Quoting Head Coach Jim Grobe on the morning scrimmage: "I think we made some improvements. The thing I'm most disappointed about on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game is that we're not very consistent. We do things in spurts. We play well for a while on offense and defense and then we take ourselves out of drives with dumb mistakes. Defensively, we'll be three and out several times and then we'll give up a 10 or 12 play drive. We've just got to be more consistent. That's my biggest concern right now. We weren't anything to write home about but we've got some guys who can play."

Quoting Head Coach Jim Grobe on the blocked field goals: "It's encouraging for the defensive side. I know we're going to continue to work on our protection. In some cases, we're asking some younger guys to protect. The biggest thing for us is to continue to put pressure on the kicker from a defensive standpoint. Hopefully we'll get to the point where we sneak through every once in a while but not too often."

On The Sideline: No new names were added to the injury report on Wednesday.

Upcoming Practice Schedule: With nine days left on the calendar before the season opener at Boston College, the team has only eight practices sessions remaining. Listed below are upcoming practice times:

Friday, Aug. 22 9-11:30 am (Campus Field); 3:30-6 pm (Campus Field)
