Haas Falls in U.S. Amateur Quarterfinals

OAKMONT, Pa. - Wake Forest golfer Bill Haas¡¦ run in the U.S. Amateur Championship ended Friday with a 2 and 1 loss to David Oh in the quarterfinals. The Championship is taking place at Oakmont Country Club.

Haas took the early lead by winning the No. 2 hole, but that was the only lead he would see during the round. Oh made it all square after a Haas bogey on No. 3, then birdied No. 4 to take a 1-up lead. Haas evened it up with a birdie on No. 5 and the pair remained at all square through nine.

Haas¡¦ struggles began on the back nine. He bogeyed both No. 10 and 11 to give Oh a 2-up lead. A nice tee shot on the 183-yard 13th hole set up a birdie which made him just one down. A bogey on 16, however, took Oh¡¦s lead back to 2-up. With both players carding par on 17, Oh was able to clinch the match at 2 and 1.

Haas¡¦ appearance marked the second straight year he¡¦s advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur. Last season he made it to the semifinals, falling to eventual champion Ricky Barnes.

Haas, who will be the lone senior on the Demon Deacon squad this fall, will next compete in the Walker Cup. The international competition between the U.S. and Great Britain/Ireland takes place at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, from Sept. 6-7.
