The Demon Deacons shot a 16-over 304 as a team and are tied with TCU. No team shot under par on Friday, as Clemson leads the 18-team field with a one-over 289. The Tigers are five strokes ahead of second-place UNLV.
Wake Forest senior Bill Haas turned in an even 72 on Friday to end the first round in a tie for 10th place. Haas, who started on No. 10, was five-under through 12 holes after eagling No. 12 and recording birdies on Nos. 15, 18 and 1. He hit a rough stretch, however, with bogeys on Nos. 3, 4 and 6 and ended the day with a double-bogey on No. 9.
Haas sits three strokes back of field leader Matt Hendrix of Clemson, who shot a three-under 69.
Just one stroke back of Haas is Deacon freshman Chad Wilcox, who sits in a tie for 16th with an opening-round 73. Wilcox got off to a strong start with two birdies through his first three holes. After making the turn at -1, Wilcox bogeyed two on the back nine to finish the day at one over.
Another Deacon freshman, Sean Moore, sits in 71st place after carding a 79. Moore got off to a rough start and was nine-over at the turn, but made three birdies on the back nine.
Sitting in a tie for 76th place are junior Doug Manchester and sophomore Kyle Reifers, both with an eight-over 80 in the first round.
The second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate gets underway Saturday. The Deacs, paired with Oklahoma and TCU, tee off from No. 10 beginning at 9:15 a.m. The final round takes place Sunday.
