DeaconSports Athlete of the Week: Taron Downey

After leading the Deacons to a victory over Memphis just eight days after an appendectomy, Taron Downey earns this week's DeaconSports Athlete of the Week.

Eight days after an emergency appendectomy, Taron Downey came off the bench to score 20 points in 29 minutes and lead Wake Forest to an 85-76 victory over Memphis in the Coaches vs Cancer Classic. Though it was considered questionable whether he would play, Downey was able to not only play, but looked as good as ever.

Hitting on 7-11 shots, Downey set a career high in points with 20 while also adding 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and even blocked a shot. In his 29 minutes, Downey did not have a single turnover.

Looking back on the game, Deacon fans have to wonder what would have happened if Downey was not available. With Justin Gray only able to play 16 minutes before fouling out, Wake Forest was especially thankful that Downey was able to go. With his incredible performance Thursday, Taron Downey has earned this week's DeaconSports Athlete of the Week.
