Donald Williams heads to Sweden

Former Tar Heel star and 1993 Final Four MVP Donald Williams ('95) is back on the international pro basketball circuit.

Williams has been signed by Plannja Basket (6-5) in Lulea, Sweden.

Brett Nelson (Florida) was released last week by Plannja creating a vacancy for Williams. Nelson was Plannja's leading scorer at 23.8 ppg, but was dismissed due to poor shot selection (taking 11 threes per game at 37%) and unsatisfactory effort on defense, according to reports by Eurobasket-Sweden.

Williams will have Brent Wright (Florida) as a teammate in Lulea. The 6-9 Wright averages 22.7 ppg and 10 rpg (2nd) in seven games. Gee Gervin (Houston) is Basketligan's top scorer at 31.6 per game with a season high of 47 points. Florida State's Delvon Arrington (14 ppg, 6.3 apg) is playing his rookie season in Sweden for 0-8 Stockholm. Josh Shoemaker of Wake Forest played for Plannja the past two seasons before going to Ourense, Spain (LEB).

Last year, Williams averaged 16 ppg for Limoges CSP in France during a season shortened by a thigh injury. This is his ninth pro season, 12th team and ninth country (Austria, Germany, Greece, Israel, USA, The Philippines, Cyprus, France and Sweden) since 1995. Williams first game is expected to be on Sunday (11/23) when Plannja visits Sodertalje (7-4).
