NC Junior Claims ACC Offers

This year's recruiting season is far from over, but that hasn't stopped many coaching staffs from getting a jump start on next year's crop of talent.

Brandon Spikes of Shelby (N.C.) Crest figures to be one of the most recruited jumbo athletes for the class of 2006. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder has already assembled a pretty impressive offers sheet.

"Back in '96 when we had [LB Shamar] Finney, everybody in the country recruited him," remarked Crest head coach Roy Kirby. "I think Spikes is going to be the same way. He has already gotten official offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, North Carolina, [and] Wake Forest. They have already sent him the letter, offered him a scholarship. He's going to be the deal."

What has recruiters heading to Crest High School so early is Spikes intangibles mixed with the aggressiveness of Charles Barkley and mental of Ray Lewis.

"He's got the intangibles," explained Kirby. "He's got the nose for the ball. He just knows where things are going. He sees it one time and you come back and try to do it again against him he's going to intercept it. And he's a big time hitter.

"He's one of these guys that loves to play the game. He plays basketball, too. He plays basketball like Charles Barkley. He loves to play the game.

"He's always talking. I have never heard him use bad language, but he runs his mouth all the time, he's sort of like Ray Lewis he's always talking all the time."

Although his recruitment has yet to truly begin, Spikes hare already began to make his campus rounds with stops at Tennessee, North Carolina, and Wake Forest.

Spikes will probably translate to a rush end or outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He has played linebacker the past two years, and played defensive line as a freshman. He played at 260 pounds his sophomore year, but slimmed down to 225 before his junior campaign. The change resulted in 65 solo tackles and three interceptions this year, despite only playing in eight games.
