According to Conley's father, former track and field star and Spiece Indy Heat coach Mike Sr., North Carolina offered his son a scholarship last week.
``Roy Williams called his high school coach last week and sent us a letter that came today," Conley Sr. "I was surprised when he (Roy) called. His explanation was that he thought Mike had already committed to Wake Forest."
One school of thought is that the Tar Heels are trying to help themselves land shooting guard Daequan Cook, Conley's AAU teammate who has said numerous occasions that he'd like to play with Conley in college.
Conley Sr. said he hasn't really had much of an opportunity to sit down and speak with his son, who hasn't played in nearly a month with a severe bone bruise in his foot, about the recent UNC scholarship offer.
``We haven't talked in-depth yet," Conley Sr. said. "I really don't know how he feels."
While the elder Conley didn't want to speak for his son, he did admit that Wake Forest remains the frontrunner.
``He really likes Wake Forest," he said. "No question about it. Their still tops on his list."
